from Stanley MacKinnon, Close to the Ocean

Published in the Cape Breton Fiddler's Collection this is what Stanley MacKinnon wrote about his friend:

Composed for my good friend and great fiddler, Alex MacDougall from North Sydney. When I met him first in the '80s and witnessed his music, I knew we would become friends and I would learn from him. He had the old 'Angus Chisholm style', and I wanted dearly to tap into that. He helped me overcome my reluctance to play in public, and encouraged me to 'keep at it'. Shortly after sharing the stage with him at an outdoor Ceilidh in Cape North in 1986, I was more than delighted to receive from Alex, an old copy of Dan Hughie MacEachern's First Collection, which was for years unavailable anwhere, along with dozens of sheets of music that Alex had gathered over the years. I am endebted to him for his inspiration and support. This tune is a tribute to one of the finest gentlemen I have ever known - and to his wife Rita. S.M.K. Nov. 10, 2001
