I suspect this tune was composed by a fiddler who also played the pipes - or else by a fiddler who lived in a community where the pipes were frequently heard. While researching possible material for the Cape Breton Highland Collection, I found the one in a couple of pipe books in settings significantly differing from the fiddle versions I was familiar with.

The earliest fiddle source, Bremner (1757) included some of the piping nuances which were removed in most of the 19th century fiddle settings. For example in The Skye the range was too wide for the pipes. Eventually I came up with this fiddle-friendly composite.

Addenda - Found in many books, rather than cause duplicatation I chose not to include this setting in the Cape Breton Scottish Collection. Instead it will likely be included as a 2nd setting in a future digital edition of The Skye Collection.
